Shirt travelers deliver from blazing Palm Springs heat: ‘The sun will cook you’

A man who wore shorts only had to be rescued by Palm Springs first responders after being stranded on a cliff due to high temperatures.

The man called 911 on Thursday at 1 pm CBS News reported. He told dispatchers that he was stuck on a cliff in the heat of nearly 110 degrees. “I’m not injured, I’ve just been in the sun, just burned,” said the caller.

Nearly two dozen rescue workers were sent to the scene, including a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter. Using ping from the man’s cell phone, rescuers were able to pinpoint his whereabouts and send the helicopter to pick him up. They found the hike and brought it to safety.

An unnamed first responder told CBS the man was “very lucky” to still have a cellphone signal. “But look how she dressed: shorts. The sun is cooking you here,” the aid worker said.

Palm Springs is cooking like a sweeping heat wave off the west coast. Saturday, it hit a record high of 120 degrees – the fourth time the desert city this year has passed 120.

Feet are never recommended when the weather is above 100 degrees, but heat fatigue can occur well before temperatures become extreme. Nausea, headache, vomiting and cramps are all signs of heat fatigue. Hiking should be stopped immediately if they feel symptoms and find a shady place to rest. Make sure you bring enough water to drink and / or pour over your body to cool.
